Combat Voice Service Threats, Mitigate Voice Frauds, Protect Your Revenues
The Importance of Voice Protection
According to the Communications Fraud Control Association (CFCA) – Fraud Loss Survey 2021, the total amount of telecom revenue loss due to fraud is estimated to be $39.89 Billion USD per annum. With many of the top fraud methods being voice related, MNOs need a way forward to combat this menacing trend.
Mitigating Voice Threats and Fraud
MNOs face the challenge of mitigating the damage caused by a broad range of voice threats and frauds such as Spoofed numbers, Wangiri calls, Flash calls and SIM Box (Interconnect Bypass).
Caller ID Spoofing (IP or CLI/ANI)
Fraudsters use call spoofing to change their caller ID, altering their origination or disguising their identity from the person they are calling. This allows them to perpetrate CLI refiling fraud, or phishing where they use impersonation to capture subscribers’ personal information. Spoofing is considered the top fraud method of 2021 with losses totalling US$2.63B per annum*
Wangiri Fraud
The term “Wangiri” originated in Japan as cash-strapped students placed “one- ring” calls to signal parents to call them back. Now the Wangiri call back scheme is used as a fraudulent way to trick victims into redialling high cost missed numbers, accounting for US$2.23B in losses per year*
Flash calls
Flash calls are an emerging form of user authentication where an automatic call is placed to a mobile number and then near-instantly dropped, enabling the recipients App to verify the user. However, as it replaces methods like A2P SMS authentication and incurs no call charge, it negatively impacts mobile operators A2P revenues. The scale of this loss is still to be quantified.
SIM Box Fraud (Interconnect Bypass)
SIM box interconnect bypass fraud uses large numbers of low cost or unpaid for SIM cards, placed in a physical device, to route voice calls, received via the Internet, onto a victim carrier’s network. By bypassing the usual interconnect fees, it is thought to cost MNOs US$0.9B annually*
