Deliver seamless end user experience across 4G and 5G with content-aware traffic management
5G Service Engine (5G-SE) is a cloud-native packet flow inspection engine that lets you identify and categorize content types and optimize content delivery accordingly. This lets you optimise the end-user experience while minimising congestion and load on your network. Because it simultaneously integrates with the 4G EPC and 5G Core, it enables you to deliver seamless experience across 4G and 5G. This is important during the 5G transition as your end-users continue to move between different access technologies in your network.
5G-SE establishes the context of content type, user, device and network within microseconds. It then determines when to insert inline services such as acceleration, filtering or data management. Because it can identify and categorize traffic even when encrypted – it can determine when to accelerate low-level protocols and flows such as TCP & UDP. As well as this, it can also identify when and how to reduce the data rate without sacrificing end user quality of experience (QoE).
Ultra-efficient packet processing engine
5G-SE is built on top of next generation Vector Packet Processing (VPP) architecture. This means it can process groups of packets with a single function that performs inspection, classification, and orchestration enforcement. As a result, it can also determine when to insert other user plane services. For example, when to apply acceleration, identity or filtering services.
Because 5G-SE uses smart machine learning heuristics instead of loss or delay-based algorithms – it enables more effective packet loss handling and burst management. This means it can increase throughput in mobile networks by up to 25%.
Seamless end user experience across 4G and 5G
During the transition to 5G, your end users will continuously move between 4G and 5G access technologies. Because 5G-SE is built upon stateless components, it is able to use a common data store to cache all subscriber and session information – regardless of whether they are connected to 4G or 5G at the time. As a result, operators get a single platform that lets them deliver a sole service experience to subscribers – so they won’t notice the transition.
Reduce network complexity and cost
With a single service across both 4G and 5G; you can maximise network efficiency, eliminate duplicated operations, and reduce platform maintenance costs. You can reduce reliance on specific vendors and eliminate vendor lock in. Not only can this increase price competition between vendors, it can also reduce the complexity of managing your network and reduce your total cost of operation.
Value added services
5G-SE enables selective service insertion. This means it can choose when it is the right time to insert an inline service depending on the needs of each type of content.
Encrypted Video Manager
HD video is wasted on a screen the size of a phone. By identifying video traffic, and limiting the bit rate to force it to default to DVD quality instead of HD; the data requirement can be reduced by 75% without the viewer even noticing a reduction in quality. This makes a big difference for the data load on your network and cost of transit. It also greatly reduces the amount of energy needed by your network and the associated costs and CO2 emissions that come with it. Read more
Identity Management
To enable selective service enforcement, 5G-SE can obtain subscriber identity information from both 4G and 5G. As well as this, the solution can also use additional methods that rely on data plane data piggy-backed with the actual traffic packets as well as by querying external entities.
